ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 calls for a fork to be pulled from service once blade thickness drops to 90 percent of original. At that point the fork has lost roughly 20 percent of its rated capacity, which quietly turns a 5,000 lb truck into a 4,000 lb truck. The same standard calls for fork inspection at least annually in single-shift operations, and more often under heavy use.
Pro Tip: Federal OSHA does not require written records of daily forklift examinations. It does require the examination itself, and it holds you responsible for showing that trucks are properly inspected. Service reports are the cleanest way to do that, and they pay off again at trade-in.
