Never Mix Grades or Brands
Hydraulic oils use different additive packages. Mixing them can lead to foaming, sludge, or seal problems. If you are unsure what is in the reservoir, drain it and start fresh rather than topping off with whatever is on the shelf.
Where to Find Your Spec
Check the operator’s manual first, then the decal near the reservoir cap. Hangcha, Toyota, Hyster, and other manufacturers publish the grade and capacity for each model. If the manual is long gone, our parts department can pull the spec by model and serial number.
Pro Tip: Automatic transmission fluid, motor oil, and universal tractor fluid are not substitutes unless the manufacturer specifically lists them. Using a fluid the manufacturer has not approved can put your warranty coverage at risk.
How Often Should Forklift Hydraulic Oil Be Changed?
The short answer is every 1,000 to 2,000 operating hours or once a year, whichever comes first. The right number for your fleet depends on how hard the trucks work and where they work.
Hours vs Calendar Time
Hour meters tell the real story. A single-shift truck running eight hours a day typically logs around 2,000 hours a year, so an annual change lands at the top of the recommended range. Manufacturers such as Toyota recommend 1,000 hours, which works out to twice a year for that same truck.
A multi-shift operation can pass 4,000 hours in the same year and may need several changes. Oil can also oxidize while a truck sits idle, which is why the one-year cap applies even to trucks that rarely move.
Severe-Service Intervals
Cut the interval to 500 to 1,000 hours if your forklift works in any of these conditions:
- Dusty yards, lumber, recycling, or aggregate sites
- Multi-shift or continuous operation
- High heat, such as foundries or summer outdoor work
- Cold storage with frequent freeze-and-thaw cycles
Replace the Filter Every Time
A fresh filter with dirty oil, or fresh oil with a clogged filter, wastes the service. Change both together, and clean the reservoir breather while you are there. The breather is a common entry point for dust and moisture.

- Milky or cloudy: Water has likely entered the system, often through the breather or a failed seal. Plan a change soon.
- Dark brown or black with a burnt smell: The oil has likely oxidized from heat or age and may have lost its protective additives.
- Foamy: Air is getting into the system, or two incompatible fluids have been mixed.
- Gritty or metallic: Internal wear may already be underway. Have the truck inspected before running it further.
Performance and Noise Warnings
- Whining or growling pump: Usually cavitation from low fluid, air in the lines, or oil that is too thick for the temperature.
- Slow, jerky, or drifting mast: Low pressure, a clogged filter, or worn cylinder seals.
- Mast will not hold a load: The control valve or lift cylinder may be bypassing. Tag the truck out until it is inspected.
- Wet cylinders, hoses, or drips under the truck: OSHA’s pre-shift inspection rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7), requires any truck with a condition that affects safe operation, including a hydraulic leak, to be taken out of service until it is repaired.
Pro Tip: Add a five-second look at the reservoir sight glass to your operators’ daily checklist. Catching a drop in level early is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever run.
